Redefining Strength: Empowering Public School Kids through Strength and Conditioning
The world of youth fitness is often misunderstood. ‘Strength training’ for children can stir up concerns among parents with a sea of myths surrounding Strength & Conditioning. A fear of injury, stunted growth or misled ideas often overshadow the incredible benefits that structured strength and conditioning programs can offer to children.
For most people, our understanding of ‘Strength’ has been conditioned to mean something else. When the general population thinks of strength, they see images of Arnold Schwarzenegger lifting heavy weights and screaming during intense workouts. In reality, strength training is far from that media perception.
At Move4Sport, our strength and conditioning is carefully planned out, focusing on individual needs and gradual progressions. We care about educating the young people we work with and helping them feel more confident during the hours they're not in the gym.
Why PE Isn't Enough
Traditional PE has a lot of issues. Whilst some schools take part in a number of sports throughout the year, little emphasis is placed on the movement skills needed to perform the ‘skill drills’ that PE teachers often set for students. There’s too much focus on competition leading to a lack of inclusivity as the less athletically inclined students feel discouraged and left out. This is all an issue because PE is too focused on the physical domain of sport, but physical education is more than just a physical domain.
One of the most valuable lessons that Youth S&C imparts is the importance of accountability and goal setting. Central to the success of any S&C program is the establishment of clear and achievable objectives for children to strive towards. These goals are always tailored to each individual’s ability level and motivations.
It will also encourage children to celebrate the achievements of progress, no matter how small, because children should be encouraged to recognise and celebrate their accomplishments. This reinforces the belief that hard work and dedication will yield tangible results over time as they develop their confidence and resilience to overcome challenges. By instilling these values of accountability and goal setting from a young age, Youth S&C programs not only equip children with the physical tools they need to thrive, but also empower them with the mindset and attitude necessary for lifelong health and success.
Sporting Opportunities
Participating in structured S&C programming opens up a world of opportunities for young people. It will teach them fundamental movements that serve as the building blocks for physical literacy. These movements and skills will transfer across many sports and physical activities. Children don't need to dream about being an athlete from a young age but taking part in S&C training opens the door to that possibility, laying the foundation for an athletic career should they choose to walk that path.
But even if they don't want to pursue a sporting career, the ability to move and control their body well is an asset that lasts a lifetime. In an age where children are spending more time sitting idle, looking at screens, equipping children with the skills to excel in sports will empower them to take control of their own health and lifestyle habits. Whether they continue to participate in organised sports or not, they will be enabled to maintain an active lifestyle well into adulthood. By creating a strong foundation early on, S&C programming sets children up for a lifetime of health and fitness.
Injury Prevention and Peace of Mind
A big aim of our S&C training involves injury prevention. It isn’t all about pushing heavy weights or getting big muscles and is more about stronger joints, muscles, bones and tendons. All of these factors reduces the chance a child or teenager gets injured. Their bodies are better equipped to handle the physical demands of sports and everyday activities.
For parents, the assurance of injury prevention is invaluable. Parents can trust that their child is equipped to take part in organised sport or physical activity without worrying about injury. This means a greater peace of mind knowing their child is safer and a lot less likely to hurt themself.
Strength & Conditioning is for Everyone
Public schools serve as hubs of community engagement and diversity. They provide the greatest opportunity to provide strength and conditioning to the most people.
By dispelling myths surrounding youth training and leveraging the resources and reach of public schools, we can empower the next generation to reach their full potential both on and off a playing field. It’s time to shift the conversation away from fear to giving our youth the tools they need to thrive.
