Youth Strength and Conditioning Squads

Our Youth S&C Squads are where young athletes come to build the physical foundations that give them an edge — in their sport, in training, and in life. These aren't generic fitness classes. Every session is coach-led, purposefully programmed, and built around the science of how young bodies actually develop.

Whether your child is 8 years old taking their first steps in athletic training, or a teenager competing at a high level in their sport — this is the environment to unlock their physical potential.

What Are the Squads?

Our squads are small-group strength and conditioning sessions designed specifically for young athletes. They're run by qualified S&C coaches who understand youth development — not just exercise, but how growing bodies respond to training, what's appropriate at each stage of maturation, and how to make the process engaging, rewarding and genuinely fun.

Think of S&C like learning a technical skill in your sport. The more consistently you develop it, the better you get. The difference is that the physical qualities you build here — strength, speed, power, coordination, resilience — carry across every sport your child plays and every season they compete in.

Every squad is structured around long-term athlete development. That means we're not chasing short-term fitness gains or putting young athletes through adult training programmes. We're building proper athletes, from the ground up.

What Actually Happens in a Session?

Every session follows a deliberate structure. Here's what your child can expect each time they walk through the door.

Activation & Dynamic Warm-Up (10–15 minutes)

Sessions never start cold. Athletes begin with a structured warm-up that prepares the body for the work ahead — raising core temperature, activating key muscle groups, and priming the nervous system. This isn't jogging on a spot — it's purposeful movement that includes mobility drills, coordination patterns, and activation exercises tailored to what's coming in the session.

For younger athletes (8–12), this often takes the form of games and movement challenges that develop body awareness and spatial coordination without them even realising it.

Speed & Agility (10 minutes)

Before moving into the heavier lifting work, athletes sharpen the athletic qualities that make a direct difference on the pitch, court, or track. Depending on the programming block, this includes:

Acceleration and sprint mechanics — learning how to drive hard out of a standing start, develop stride length and frequency, and apply force into the ground more effectively.

Change of direction and agility — reactive drills, ladder work, cone patterns, and competition-based challenges that develop multi-directional speed and decision-making under pressure.

This section is deliberately varied and often competitive. Athletes challenge each other, race each other, and push each other — which is exactly what keeps young people switched on and working hard.

Skill & Strength Development (25–30 minutes)

This is the core of the session. Athletes develop fundamental movement skills and build strength through progressive, technically coached exercises. The focus is always quality over quantity.

For younger athletes this means mastering the movement patterns that underpin all physical activity — how to hinge, squat, push, pull, land and jump safely and effectively. Loads are bodyweight or very light, and the emphasis is on motor learning and confidence.

For older athletes, sessions become progressively more demanding. Barbell work, weighted exercises, and more complex movement patterns are introduced at the right time, always underpinned by solid technique and appropriate load management. Athletes learn to lift confidently and correctly — skills that reduce injury risk and directly translate into better sport performance.

Programming rotates through blocks targeting different qualities: strength endurance, maximal strength, power development, and structural resilience. Athletes don't do the same session every week — they follow a structured plan that builds over time.

Mobility & Cool-Down (5 minutes)

Sessions close with a short, focused cool-down. Targeted mobility work, breathing, and a brief coach-led debrief on what they've done and why it matters. We believe young athletes should understand their training — not just do it — so even in five minutes we make sure they leave knowing more than when they arrived.

How It All Works — Your Child's Journey Into Squads

Before any young athlete joins a squad, they go through a personal onboarding session with one of our coaches. This isn't just an admin step — it's one of the most important things we do.

Every athlete is different. Different sports, different goals, different physical development stages, different strengths and weaknesses. The onboarding session gives us the information we need to make sure squads is the right fit for your child, and that from day one they're in the right environment to thrive.

Here's what the onboarding session covers:

Maturation & Development Assessment

Youth athletes are not small adults. The physical and hormonal changes that happen across the ages of 8–18 have a huge impact on how a young person should train, what they're ready for, and what we should be careful about. We assess each athlete's maturation status so we can match the training environment and demands to where they actually are in their development — not just their age.

This is something most programmes ignore completely. We consider it non-negotiable.

Baseline Performance Testing

We put every new athlete through a short battery of physical tests to establish a clear starting point. These give us objective data on strength, power, speed, and mobility — and they give your child a baseline to measure their progress against. Seeing real improvement in real numbers is one of the most powerful motivators for a young athlete.

Tests are always age-appropriate, low-pressure, and framed as a chance to show us what they've got — not a pass/fail exam.

Goal Setting

We sit down with your child and ask them what they want to get out of their training. Where do they want to improve? What does progress look like to them? What's happening in their sport that they want to be better at? Setting clear, personalised goals from the start means every session has a purpose — and athletes stay motivated because they can see the path from where they are to where they want to be.

Movement Assessment & Competency Check

We run each athlete through a movement screen to assess how well they currently move across key fundamental patterns. We're looking at things like how they squat, hinge, land from a jump, and control their body through basic positions. This tells us a huge amount — not just about injury risk, but about where to start them in terms of exercise selection and progression.

If we spot anything that needs attention — a movement limitation, an asymmetry, a gap in coordination — we address it within the squad programme from the very beginning.

Is Squads the Right Environment?

The onboarding also lets us make sure the squad setting is genuinely the best fit for your child at this point in their development. For most young athletes, squads is exactly the right place to start. But occasionally an athlete may benefit more from individual sessions first, or may need a modified approach within the group. We'll always be honest with you about this — because our goal is for every athlete to be in the environment where they're going to develop best.

Once onboarding is complete, your child moves into squads with a clear plan, a coach who already understands them, and the foundation to make the most of every session they attend.

Why Move4Sport?

We are a team of qualified, accredited strength and conditioning coaches with over 40 years of collective experience in the industry. We specialise in youth populations and have worked with elite-level athletes across tennis, swimming, football, rugby, athletics, and many more sports.

What makes us different isn't just our qualifications — it's our philosophy. We are people first. We invest in developing great athletes by first investing in developing great people. Every session, every coach, every programme decision is guided by that principle.

Our squads exist to develop educated, resilient, performing young athletes — and we believe those three things are inseparable.

Educated means athletes who understand their bodies, their training, and why what they're doing works. Young people who know the reason behind the work are more engaged, more consistent, and make smarter decisions about their health and performance as they get older. We coach the athlete, not just the exercise.

Resilient means physically durable athletes who are less likely to get injured, recover better when they do, and can handle the demands of a full training and competition schedule across their sport. Resilience isn't built by training harder — it's built by training smarter, with proper load management, appropriate progression, and a genuine understanding of each athlete's developmental stage. That's exactly what our onboarding process and ongoing programming deliver.

Performing means athletes who get better. Stronger, faster, more powerful, more coordinated — and who can see and feel that progress in how they play. Our programmes are designed to produce real, measurable improvements in physical output that transfer directly onto the pitch, court, pool, or track.

And underpinning all of it is an environment that athletes genuinely want to be in. Sessions are competitive, energetic, and fun. Young athletes push each other, celebrate each other's wins, and build the kind of training habits that stick for life — because they enjoy the process. We know that the most physically developed young athlete is one who turns up consistently and gives everything — and that only happens in an environment they love being part of.

Move Better. Live Better. Play Better.
